TMC reaches members at the USW Health, Safety and Environment Conference

The 2024 HSE Conference took place in Pittsburgh, Pa., Aug. 18-23.

The Tony Mazzocchi Center was honored to play a significant role in the 2024 United Steelworkers (USW) Health, Safety and Environment Conference last month. The HSE Conference took place at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center and Westin Hotel in Pittsburgh, Pa., on Aug. 18-23. Check out some highlights from the TMC below!

Workshops

The TMC offered several workshops, offered multiple times over the span of the conference, including:

  • Disaster Preparedness and Response
  • Increasing the Effectiveness of Labor-Management Health and Safety Committees
  • Intergenerational Solidarity

  • Introduction to the Triangle of Prevention (TOP) Program
  • Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 10-hour General Industry
  • Resiliency: Overcoming Difficult Situations
  • Strategic Planning Tools for Solving Health and Safety Problems
  • Superfund Awareness and Fence-line Communities
  • Understanding the Basics of Respiratory Protection
  • Union Approach to Industrial Hygiene
  • Union Strategies for Effective Health and Safety Committees
  • Women's Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Workplace Communication

 Almost all the workshops were available in a bilingual (English/Spanish) format, and some included French interpretation.

TOP Conference

The 2024 Triangle of Prevention Conference also took place in conjunction with the HSE Conference duringthe last workshop track on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. At this union-management gathering, condensed TOP-specific workshops were held, as well as site reports and awards and recognition for those working collectively within the program. Congratulations to USW Local Union 13-228 and Indorama Ventures, located in Port Neches, Texas, as the recipient of the Glenn Erwin Award. And congratulations to USW Local Union 11-241 and HF Sinclair in El Dorado, Kansas, upon receiving the Fallen Workers Memorial Award. A special recognition to USW Local Union 13-423 and Motiva Enterprises in Port Arthur, Texas, for being selected by the TOP Conference attendees as the recipient of the “TOP People’s Choice Award.”

Plenary

The TMC’s Program Director Trish Creech and Worker-Trainer Brock Hatlevig of USW Local Union 715 in District 7 spoke at the Tuesday plenary session regarding the TMC and the TOP program. They generated traffic to the exhibit hall and all of the workshops!
