Over 50 years ago on April 28, the Occupational Safety and Health Act was enacted, promising all workers the right to a safe job. We now recognize this significant date as Workers Memorial Day.

Whoever frames the debate wins the argument. I first heard Tony speak those words over 20 years ago. There was a group of us (there was always a group of us) standing around a kitchen counter in a Florida hotel suite listening to Tony’s words of wisdom.

Milton Simmons is the Triangle of Prevention (TOP) representative at United Steelworkers (USW) Local Union 9-675, representing members at 3M in Guin, Ala. Simmons is also an active worker-trainer for the Tony Mazzocchi Center (TMC) with experience in TOP courses, Incident Investigation, Near-Miss Prevention and more. Simmons shared his solidarity poems with us in order to add to our #TMCtogether initiative, which aims to being us all together even though we are apart during the coronavirus pandemic. In the fall of 2019, Operations, Maintenance, Safety and the United Steelworkers (USW) Local Union 13-750 worked together to safely execute a ram pump job on the H-Oil unit.

Local 10-5852 members at the Bettis Atomic Laboratory in West Mifflin, Pa., boosted their health and safety program through new contract language, management participation in the USW’s health and safety conference and training through the USW Tony Mazzocchi Center (TMC).

Join in with us on April 28 as we remember those who lost their lives or were injured on the job, and as we continue to promote the health and safety of workers everywhere.

For 28 years, the USWTMC has received Nuclear Worker Training Program grants from the NIEHS and the DOE to train current and future atomic workers.
